North Harbour’s one-to-five-year women’s representative team produced a comprehensive performance in winning the quadrangular tournament at Sunnybrae at the weekend.

Harbour won all three of its matches to finish convincingly ahead of Auckland, Waikato and Northland.

The Gaye Horne skipped four of Michele Macdonald, Jeni Hart and Rosemary Nicol, the triple of Sharron Parker, Karen Vaisssiere and Hemoata Brown and the pair of Kathy Stevens and Hanaan Shahwan, all were in fine form, fully justifying the hard work of the management team, Trish O’Malley, Judy McSweeney and Garth Partridge.

The comfortable win was achieved despite the unavailability through illness of one of the squad’s most reliable members, Irene Costello.

In its quadrangular tournament the men’s one-to-five representative team could not duplicate the ladies’ success.

The Shaun Goldsbury-skipped four of Willie Tonga, Laurie Kean and Guy Robson, the triple of Wayne Harris, Michael Thomas and Alan McQuoid and the pair of Andy Dorrance and Paul Daniels, finished in 3 place, equal with Northland, having won just three of their nine matches.

Team manager Ian McKenzie praised the ladies but described the day as hard and disappointing for the men, the one bright spot being the four of Goldsbury, Tonga, Kean and Robson who won two of the three matches.

The overall result is obtained by adding both the women’s and the men’s results together and this came down to just the one game difference with Auckland having 36 game points and North Harbour with 33.  Eight out of nine wins for the ladies and two Harbour games being lost by just one point. A close competition and a strong performance by North Harbour.
