Remembering Trish O’Malley

  • March 3, 2024

Bowls North Harbour has lost an excellent servant and vivacious personality with the death of Trish O’Malley on Friday, March 1, after a short illness.

After enjoying a measure of success as a one-to-five year-bowler and also up to the one-to-eight-year level, Trish had been closely involved for the past two seasons with her friend Judy McSweeney as joint conveners of the centre’s one-to-five-year women representative team.

In fact, she had only just finished a representative training session on Wednesday, February 21, when on her return she suddenly took ill and was rushed to hospital in considerable pain.

Trish’s partner, Ross Edwards, was also a prominent bowler and mentor and winner of a centre title from the Warkworth club.

Judy McSweeney says she and Ross taught her plenty about bowls and she was part of their team when visiting many clubs both in the Auckland centre as well as Harbour.

And Trish and she were together in many Harbour representative teams at junior level and in a national one-to-eight tournament in Christchurch they had finished third equal.

Trish came from a background in yachting and started bowls at Auckland’s St Heliers club before moving across the bridge to play at Orewa, Mairangi Bay and Manly.

Judy says she and Trish were good bowling mates and while essentially a private person Trish had a bubbly personality.

Bowls North Harbour sends its condolences to Trish’s family.
