Winter Cup – Orewa Three Reign Supreme on Men’s Finals Day
On a beautiful fine Winter Day at Hobsonville saw some great bowling and team comradery.
In the Quarter Final’s a gallant Orewa side prevailed over Manly needing 2 extra ends to eventually win through to the Semi Finals. Both Birkenhead sides had comfortable wins and Warkworth (who were unbeaten in Section Play) overcame Beach Haven to also progress to the Semi Finals.
In a thrilling Semi Final between Orewa and Birkenhead Bees, it was Orewa who jumped out to a massive lead 15-1, however the Bees never gave in and clawed their way back to be leading by a single shot playing the last end and looked like that it could be an all Birkenhead Final. Orewa picked up 2 Bonus Points in the last end and both sides traded blows before Orewa secured the win and a place in the Final. In the other Semi Final it was the Stingers from Birkenhead that prevailed over Warkworth.
The Final was a very one sided affair and Birkenhead never recovered from a slow start to eventually be convincingly well beaten by an outstanding Orewa Team.
