Results – Winter Cup 2025

  • July 19, 2025

A formidable Mairangi Bay team of Sheryl Wellington, Jan Gledhill, Colleen Rice and Theresa Rogers completed a three-peat in the event by winning the Centre’s Winter Cup women’s competition on Friday, July 18.  The four repeated its successes in 2023 and 2024 by beating Takapuna’s Robyne Walker, Adele Ineson, Lyn Calver and Jan Calcott in the final 24-17, furthering the impressive results Mairangi Bay has had in women’s events in recent seasons.

It was an even contest but the experience of the Mairangi ladies was a telling factor over the final few ends. Sheryl, Jan and Theresa are all centre gold star badge holders and Colleen also several titles to her credit.  They came to the play-off, having won all seven of their section round-robin matches. Takapuna emerged from what was a competitive section with just the one defeat in seven matches to head off Mairangi Bay’s second team skipped by Elaine McClintock.

Thankfully, both the men’s and women’s competitions were completed in reasonably good conditions, a contrast to the unpleasant weather on the opening two days.

The Hobsonville number two team was a decisive winner of the men’s Winter Cup with a surprisingly comfortable 29-11 win in the final over the experienced Birkenhead line-up of Evan Thomas, John Hindmarch, Jimmy Heath and Keith Burgess.   The winning side was Stephen Thorn, John Roberts, Fred Pereeti and Grant Beach.

In the semi-finals the Hobsonville four was also in commanding form, with another big win 29-10 over the Leon Wech-skipped Mairangi Bay Marlins.
Birkenhead won the other semi, 20-9 over the Mairangi Bay Sharks of Phil Chisholm, Gordon Jenkins, Allan Langley and David Payne.
