Results – The Grove Orewa BNH 1-5 Year Championship Singles

  • April 14, 2025

Apart from the surprise emergence of Milford bowler Hayden Wilkinson, Orewa and Hobsonville bowlers, for the most part, again dominated the Bowls North Harbours 1 to 5 year singles championships at the weekend.

Wilkinson spoiled what would have been utter domination of those from Orewa or Hobsonville by upstaging the centre’s leading men’s junior bowlers of the past couple of seasons in winning the 1 to 5 year men’s title.

In the final at Helensville he beat Clinton Smith (Hobsonville) 21-9. In the semi-finals Wilkinson had also beaten another centre junior representative, Orewa’s Wayne Harris 21-16.  A relative newcomer to the sport, Wilkinson has clearly benefitted from the tutelage of Milford’s leading bowler, and club president, Charlie McDonald.

Smith appeared on course to retain his title, with his semi-final win 21-17 over another top 1 to 5 year bowler of the past couple of years, Orewa’s Allan McQuoid. Another of the centre’s more prominent juniors, Manly’s Shaun Goldsbury, was an early casualty in post-section, beaten 21-19 by Orewa’s Kerry Greenhalgh.

It was a Hobsonsville quinella in the women’s final with Deanne Bronlund beating her club-mate, and last season’s winner, Carol Voshaar, 21-15. Both these players were mainstays this season of the centre 1 to 5 representatives and were among those expected to go deep in the tournament.

However, as with Wilkinson in the men’s championship, a Milford player, Tracey McDonald, was an upsetting factor, making the semi-finals where she was beaten by Voshaar 21-12. It was still mighty effort by Stacey and another proud moment for Charlie McDonald, who is her dad.   Stacey performed well to beat the promising centre representative Jo Wyatt (Browns Bay) in the quarter-finals, Bronlund beat Joanne Staines (Sunnybrae) 21-19 in her semi-final, while there was a heavyweight quarter-final clash between Voshaar and Jeni Hart (Helensville), with Voshaar winning 21-17.
